Over the next couple of days, you will probably hear a lot about how to make better design, how to execute better, and how to consider your clients or the end user when you're doing what you have to do. I'd like to add another item to the list to consider as you sit here for the next two days, which is how can you help the human race? I'm not joking either, this is something I think we all have to be aware of. At the end of the day, the human animal is a social animal, and our very survival depends on our ability to form communities and cultures. So, what is a community? What is a culture? It's a group of people with a common set of values and beliefs. The same goes for a country and a company. When we're surrounded by people who believe what we believe, something remarkable happens. Trust emerges. Trust is not just a checklist or being reliable. We need trust to take risks, to experiment, and to explore. Trust is based on common values and beliefs. We're not good at everything by ourselves. If I send you out to fight a sabertooth alone, odds are the tiger will win. But if you go out as a group, we can achieve amazing things because we all have our strengths and weaknesses. The goal is not to fix your weaknesses, but to amplify your strengths and surround yourself with people who can do what you can't. Trust comes from shared values and beliefs. When you're in a strange environment or surrounded by people who don't believe what you believe, you look for anyone who may share some of the same values and beliefs.
